It’s time to take off your glasses and
rest your weary eyes, my dear.
The ones you use to stare at your warped reflection,
where things are not always as they appear.

You spot the deep lines left behind
from years of strife and woe,
like rivers of sand across your skin
eroding your once youthful glow.

Examining the spots of dried blood from
wounds too fresh to be cleaned
and scars from scabbed over skin,
partly healed from when time intervened.

Look down and you might find yourself
collecting pieces of your shattered heart in your hand,
falling between your fingers like glass shards
disappearing in the quicksand.

Your teary eyes droop like heavy boulders,
weathering away under the weight of the tide,
attempting to wash away all this pain
you’ve been keeping inside.

All you see are what remains
of a girl who was ready to give up,
left behind by those who made her feel
like she was never enough.

Go ahead, take them off.

Their murky lenses and distorted frames
have made you blind,
clouding your vision and
poisoning your mind.

Remove them and you might
discover at last
a woman filled with strength and will
who is not defined by the pain from her past.

Each line on your face
just a passing snapshot
on the road to the beautiful life
you have so desperately sought.

It’s time you embraced
all the growth you’ve achieved
and never lose sight of the
love you’ve received.

I’m incredibly proud of the
woman you are
and the journey you’re on.
You have come way too far

to let rose-colored lenses
just get in your way.
Take them off, my dear,
the healing begins today.
